Synopsis |
|
On
a very cold winter morning, two friends meet after many years.
Hunjoon (KIM Taewoo) who has just got back from USA after
his film studies and Munho (YOO Jitae), a part time lecturer
at a university, reminisce over the past, drinking in a Chinese
restaurant. Hours' of drinking and talks, mixed with the recollections
of the past bring them back the memory of a woman. A woman
they both were romancing during the same period of time.
After wandering in their own version of reminiscence,
they decided to find and meet her, who turns out to be running
a hotel lobby bar in Puchon, a satellite city near Seoul.
The woman, Sunhwa (SUNG Hyunah), without showing much emotion
upon their appearance, asks them to wait in front of her apartment.
When she returns, they begin a decadent drinking party till
the daybreak. The reminiscence over the past goes on, this
time with three different versions and emotions of each of
them.
Next morning Munho runs into one of his students
on the street and another day filled with emotional ups and
downs comes ahead before him until he finally gets home. Another
banal yet intriguing story from the director, according to
Cahiers du Cinema, who has "a rare and invaluable talent for
exploring the mystery of human nature"

Director's Comment
A few years ago, probably during the Festival d'Automne in
Paris, I was hanging out around the Place Saint-Michel. I
passed by a bookshop that was selling postcards. One of them
showed Aragon with the words Woman is the Future of Man. I
didn't know who Aragon was exactly, even if his name sounded
vaguely familiar. However, these words had a very fresh sound
to them. They immediately attracted my attention without my
really knowing why.
A year ago, when I was developing different ideas for this
film, they came back to me. Since then, they have remained
with me¡¦ but I think that the quote masks something. Behind
it, I jump from one word to the next without attempting to
capture the specific meaning of the whole. These words are
so ordinary and cover such a scope of meanings that they end
up no longer having any signification at all. I have many
words like that in mind. The word "future" describes a time
that isn't yet here, something purely conceptual, that doesn't
exist. When it comes down to it, the future of man is nothing.
Woman would no longer correspond to anything either. In fact,
in three words, this sentence says nothing. It is a void but
these three words contribute to the creation of a state of
pleasant confusion.
